There were several good ways to start a day. A nice full cup of fresh coffee was definitely one of them, but such a thing was a luxury in Bordertown and not something Will could currently afford. Yes, he had a job now and he wasn’t paid half bad either, but that didn’t mean he could waste money on way too expensive coffee. Not yet. He also hadn’t woken up with someone in his bed this morning, so that pretty much ruled out another thing on the list of ‘good way to start your day’.

So, going for a jog it was.

It was a lovely spring morning, the sky a perfect shade of blue and only a couple of little clouds floating up there. There was a light breeze and it was still cool – seeing as how it was only a bit past 7am – so it was absolutely perfect weather for a workout. It seemed he was not the only one thinking this.

There were dozens of people out in Gryphon Park already. Some going for a run, others walking their dogs, some just to chat. Will had to admit he really admired the dedication of the last group, because at this hour, they had to either have serious sleep issues or no life.

Either way, he made a mental note to talk to some of them.

And he did, after running a good couple of laps. Running in a park was better than running down the Bordertown streets. The scenery was a lot nicer and you never really had to stop to check whether you were still in the right territory. It worked for everyone involved. And since at 8.30, Will couldn’t find himself a park bench that wasn’t occupied – and after working out for over an hour, it would be rude to sit and stink next to a person – he decided that the grass was decent enough and sat down near the pond. The water wobbled ever so lightly, reflecting the rays of the sun. Will just closed his eyes for a sec.

Ah. Could this day be any more perfect?

Maybe, maybe not. It depended on your definition of perfect. But if it couldn’t get better, it could certainly get worse.

The gentle ruffled water in front of Will bulged, and went gloop. A face appeared, at least half a face. Wet, dirty blonde hair, skin of an unhealthy-looking pallor, and slightly bulging, suspicious yellow eyes. Below that remained submerged, including the nose; clearly breathing air was optional. Those eyes focused on Will, and gave him a measuring look.

A little wobbling of water couldn’t make Will open his eyes. Neither did the gentle breeze that touched his warm cheeks as he sat there, his chin tilted up slightly towards the gentle sun. He heaved a relaxed sigh, seemingly completely unaware of what was happening around him. Perhaps that was a mistake, here in Bordertown. After all, the was a place where everything could happen, at any moment.

But in that moment, Will did not care. Right now, all he could think about was how perfectly wonderful life was and how he loved every moment of it.

The figure by the water’s edge didn’t move, it’s eyes remained closed. It’s? His? Probably. Asleep? Maybe. Stoned? Quite possibly. Yellow eyes scanned over Will’s still form, but there was nothing obvious that might be opportunistically lifted from it. No, there was no profit to be made here that Toad could see. Just maybe some entertainment.

The swimmer rose slightly further out of the water, revealing a wide mouth and bare shoulders. He took a single breath of air before opening his mouth. “Bad place to sleep.” The water-laden figure observed.

Bordertown was filled with odd creatures, Will had come to learn. People with tones of skin that he had never seen before in his life. People with gills. People who were cats rather than people. In short, all kinds of people. So when his eyes fluttered open and he spotted a creature coming from the pond in front of him, he didn’t look too surprised. One of his eyebrows did move upwards a little, though.

“Is it?” he wondered out loud. It seemed like a perfect spot; quiet, sunny, comfortable. He then jerked his head towards the water slightly. “That doesn’t look like the best place to swim either, but you’re still doing it.”
