A New Kid's Guide to B-Town

In order to try to make it as easy as possible for people to explore the game and get involved in it, this guide has been put together to explain the basics of joining Bordertown. The steps of this guide are set up in an order that will hopefully start by familiarizing you with the game and end with leading you through the application process. Feel free to skip around as you see fit, but try to hit every step so you don't miss any important information.

Note: In the world of Bordertown, there really are printed guides the city available in the human World and elfin Realm alike, enabling characters to read up on the city before venturing to it. Many of the site documents are written as if addressing characters who might have picked up a guidebook.

The Setting, Plot and Premise
Well, you hopefully know the basics about the game by now, but there's more to know. Head over to these topics to learn more. The Rules and Questions
Click here to see our list of rules. If you have a question, post questions in the Cbox or our guest-friendly Help Desk.

Registration
Once you have a basic idea for a character, register an account with the name your character goes by (normal capitalization please). For resources that may help you with character creation, check out our Useful Links. Before you start working on an application, you may want to check the Citizen Records to see what current players have come up with and how they've addressed their applications.

The Application Process
Check out the Application and start filling it out. Once the application's done and posted in the main area (with your character's name as the thread title), wait for your application to be reviewed. Please don't post in any IC forums until your character has been approved. Once your application has been approved and moved to the proper subforum, you're ready to play!

Getting Started
If you don't already have threading or plotting opportunities lined up, posting a thread in the plotting area with some brainstorming ideas or singing up for other members' plots may be a good way to introduce people to your character and get started. You can also hop over to The Poop, the In-Character town bulletin board to see what current characters are getting up to (and have your character leave a note of their own)

Remember that all thread are, by default, open to everyone and any number of characters, so get thread-hunting! Members who are looking for more people to fill there thread might post a line in our Join My Thread! listing. Always feel free to start new threads of your own and PM individual players if you spot a specific character you would like to thread with.

Feeling Overwhelmed?
That's okay. There's a lot of information about Bordertown. If you're eager to get started, but all the pre-registration reading is making you narvous, scroll down to our "Quick Start Guide."

Quick-Start Guide

This quick-start guide that gets you going with a playable character as quickly as possible and allow you to discover the rest of the world along with your character.

You will be making a Human Noob running away to Soho. In Bordertown a Noob is any person who is brand-new (IC) to the city. Any member, no matter how long they've been on the board, can have a a Noob character. Noobs are brand-new to the world and aren't expected to know all the ins and outs of the world. The advantage is that as a a player of a Human Noob, you can get away with not having read everything right away (We do recommend eventually reading the rest of the guides, though).

Besides the rules and setting, the most essential docs are "How to get there:The World" and "Technology & Magic" as these are to major factors that even Noobs will have likely already experienced. Beyond that, you and your character can be wide-eyed and bushy-tailed. Your human can be of any demographic background, any country, any identity. All roads lead to Bordertown. All they need to do is want to come.

You can also use this method to create a new-to-Bordertown elf or half-elf. Just be sure to read the Guide to Elves and "How to get there: The Realm". Half-elves can be raised in either Elfland or the human World.

We recommend making your character's first IC stop the Dancing Ferret. Farrel Din, the owner gives a free beer to the new kids and Lily, his player, is more than happy to make this first new thread for players. Remember that unless they take place in a private residence, all threads are open, so you never know who could wander in or where your character could wander to.

Welcome to Bordertown. We hope you enjoy your stay.
