It was probably ridiculous for a man of almost thirty years old to have this much fun throwing around snow. There had to be some sort of anomaly in Ilyas’ brain – another? – that made him enjoy this, but there was an even bigger anomaly there that made him give absolutely no shit about it today. And everyone around now got a chance to witness it as well, without him giving a rat’s ass about it. Maybe they’d hold it against him at some point, but guess what? He cared not. Not right now.

Winter was the best season of the year, even in this town. It’d snowed for two days straight, which meant that the white substance was all around and it was basically breathing cold air into people’s faces. Ilyas was unmistakably in a better mood when things were this cold. Also, it was the holiday season. This was not something he cared greatly about, because he had little reason to celebrate anything in particular, but there were other people who thought this was an important time.

There were children who deserved to enjoy this time.

Wasn’t that what Christmas and Chanoeka and whatever other holidays existed were all about? Giving and sharing and happy people. Ilyas did not fit in there in any way whatsoever, and yet he was here, with Bacon, probably due to another anomaly in his brain.

George knew there were plenty.

Magpie Lane. The Bards. Only a handful of times had Ilyas been here, but it had been enough times to understand that these people could occasionally use a helping hand. And since he had recently learned that the children from Oberon House wouldn’t remember him – except for that one girl he’d addressed and given directions in there – it was a safe place to visit now. Besides, since the ink on his arms still hadn’t faded even a bit, even though it’d been over a week since going to the Digger House, the chances of them recognizing him were about zero anyway.

None of them had been able to resist dog cuddles, or a snowball fight. Children loved dogs, and they loved snowball fights. Girls versus boys. Of course Ilyas was on the girl team. Some things simply never changed. It also wasn’t a surprise that they would soon gang up against ‘the big guy with the tats’. Kids that couldn’t stop laughing. A barking dog, wagging his tail in the background. Ending up with snow in your hair and down your shirt and in your boots..

Wasn’t a better feeling in the world.

There were benefits to having misbehaved enough to earn a to-the-skin fur coat from Farrel Din, Skeezix decided, once it'd proven to be more than a day for the spell to wear off. For example, one could walk about through the drifts of snow and ice and never once feel too bloody cold.

It'd been easily over a decade since full body snowsuits fit enough for a good romp in the white cold. So that morning, after a bellyful of scrambled eggs and last night's leftovers at the Digger's, she'd started roaming around town again as a cat. Added benefits included not being cornered by very stupid drug heads unless one was very unwary.

Or the druggies were sober enough to jump and slide down the rooftops covered in snow. Who needed a sledding hill when you were 16 pounds of fluff and muscle? Being a cat, Skeezix didn't have the vocal chords to giggle as she dove down the slope of one roof, plowing a swath of snow in front of her that plopped off the edge onto whomever the unfortunate below was.

If they looked up, they'd probably hear the mighty purr before seeing the snow-dusted blonde fluffball of a cat on the roof peering down at them.

Getting covered in snow by the hands of a bunch of youngsters was all in good fun. When a cat did it, it was an act of terrorism. It all reflected in its eyes when it glanced down from the rooftop. Cats never did things by accident. They had been scheming and plotting to put their evil plans to work. It had probably even peed on the snow first, before sending it down.

Ilyas, after shortly glancing up himself, just rolled his eyes. There were children present. He could hardly publicly scold a cat, even if it deserved it. Even if kids deserved to know they were the spawn of Satan, but there were better things to do. Things that were more valuable. As he shook the snow out of his hair, a new load was already coming. Since those boys weren’t nearly tall enough to reach Ilyas’ head, it didn’t end up in his hair, but practically every other body part that could be reached by kid hands was bombarded with the white stuff. And then there was an endless amount of children’s giggling. “Oh. Payback time.” The nearby roof tiles stared to shake as snow made its way down towards the ground.

Oh well biscuits it was Blondie, but he seemed more occupied with playing with the kids of whatever house this was. Actually playing and by the wonder of all sane gods the man was smiling and laughing with them as the little sprogs started pelting him with snowballs.

Skeezix was privately delighted at this little scene playing before her and it warmed her heart. Of course, it was going to end up being another secret that would go to the grave, because Blondie would lose his shit if anyone ever found out he was fond and kindly of children. Still, it was a good way to spend a few minutes.

At least until the snow on the rooftop started shaking under her paws. There was a brief double take to the roof before green eyes narrowed at the large blonde man.

This was just dirty pool, even if the man had no idea who he was about to send sprawling into the snow.

Of course, one of the children was just now noticing the orange in the white of the snow and shouted, "KITTY!" at the top of their wee lungs.

Goddammit, this better not be a repeat of what happened at the Ferret.

Ilyas had not known that the cat had still been standing around doing its cat things up on that roof, and so he could not have known that, with all the snow tumbling down from there, the cat was probably, most likely, also going to come down and end up in a cold pile of white. By the time some kid yelled KITTY, it had already been too late.

Kids liked cats. George knew why, but they liked cats, despite their scratching and biting and bitching. Maybe because they looked soft and cuddly? Kids were deceived by such things.

It explained why practically all of them, save for a couple, ran towards the feline and the snow and there were ‘oh’s’ and ‘ah’s’ and other sounds children made when they stumbled upon something they considered cute. Again, this for some reason seemed a bad moment to reveal to them that cats were evil and all that stuff. But at the rate this was going – with nearly all of them trying to pick up and forcing tight hugs on the fluffball – it was a matter of time before someone would get injured.

Inwardly, Skeezix was cursing Blondie's name and shitty sense of vengance as she tumbled off of the roof with the avalanche of snow and landed in the pile before becoming partially buried. Of course the children would think that an orange fluffy head popping out of the snow and shaking her comically large tufted ears out was the most wonderful thing ever. TO GRAB AT.

Goddammit.

There was only one way to respond to the onslaught of eager children and that was to be as limp as a ragdoll as they picked her up and passed her around. Like some sort of huge warm, living teddy bear. The only time that retaliation was required was when one over-eager child attempted picking up the cat by the tail, and even then, he was slapped by a large paw without any claws before being head-butted affectionately. Kids were snot monsters and darlings in equal measure and if they were grabbing critters by the tail, it was only because no one had taught them any better.

“Don’t—“ Don’t grab the cat by the tail or the neck or the hind legs? Children learned two ways; by being told not to do certain stuff, but even more so, by experiencing that what they were doing was a bad thing. And it seemed the latter was happening on the spot. Even more powerful than Ilyas’ word would be a cat lashing out. A simple message: don’t do that again.

It seemed no one had gotten seriously hurt, though. No blood or scratches, just kids picking snow out of cat fur. Since they were kids and they would sooner or later get sick of this anyway, Ilyas decided to just wait it out and take a seat by the ridiculously large snowman people had build earlier.

Large people.

Whenever there was cuddling and giggling and affection from anyone, there was a certain someone who was simply too curious to not butt in. When he caught sight of the circle of little humans doing their little human things, Bacon was unable to stay away. He was simply too curious about what they were doing and what they had in the middle of that circle! Little humans were so interesting.

He first tried to look around them, under their human legs. He even attempted to put his paws up against one of them to glance over, but he knew well this wasn’t allowed, because little humans tended to tumble over when Bacon did such things. So, instead of breaking rules and risking there being raised voices, he just forced his way through the circle, to the inside.

"Ok you! Little boy who is grabbing my hind legs, you're going to cut that bullshit out or I WILL START USING CLAWS." Skeezix thought as she twisted up and began what could only be called the fluffiest bitch slapping of the day. "Do you like being grabbed by your legs? No, I don't think so!"

She was huffing and barking as the child released his painfully tight death grip. Being allowed to fall and twist to land on her own two feet again Right in front of the big soft inquisitive black canine nose that was sniffing about at the center of the children's curious joy. Soon it was followed by the rest of a familiar and happy goofball of a dog.

Well if the children wanted a show..The moment the black lab had shoved his shoulders through, Skeezix bounded up to pounce both forepaws around the dog's neck and began headbutting and licking at him like he was an old friend.

The shrill cries of delight and comments on cat dog friends was more than enough for her.

Bacon was a pretty easygoing dog. He did not mind it much when humans grabbed his tail or his ears. He did not mind it when some of them tried to climb on him – that went only for the tiny ones, at least. And all the cuddling and scratching under his chin and his belly was very much appreciated. Bacon had decided that these little humans were likeable creatures.

He had not quite expected to find what he did in the midst of that circle. After sniffing a good couple of times, he determined there was a cat here. His ears moved backwards, tail down, because if Bacon had to chase that little monster off, he would. No matter how scary they were. But then, when he actually spotted the cat, he seemed to relax again.

Hey. He knew that one!

That one wasn’t so bad. That one was a pretty nice cat, actually. Bacon and that Cat had gone on adventures together and not once had he been hit by nasty claws or bitten with those cat teeth. So when it put its paws against him, he jumped playfully. Of course, not realizing that this may result into the cat, who was quite a bit smaller than Bacon was, to tumble over.

Whumpf!

There, in the crowd of giggling children, was the sound of a cat face planting into the snow as her very goofy canine friend jumped and bounced happy to see her again. Yes, he was a good dog, such a good obvious doggie yes he was.

When she had thumbs again, Bacon would probably receive many scritches and rubs from Skeezix, but for now, fuzzy headbutting and purring would have to do. She was happy to see him too, did he know that the purring was her happy noise? No, he was a dog, so probably not, but the children were reaching in to pet both of them now, and not grabbing, since it was hard to grab two animals at once, especially when one was larger than you.

Bacon was a good dog, but he was a completely oblivious one. Of course, he knew a lot about dog business, but when it came to cats or even certain humans, he was pretty clueless. He learned fast, though! When he saw that Cat tumbled over after he had bounced around, he only continued to bounce around for a little longer and then contained his excitement. He managed to stand still and look down at the feline, although his tail obviously kept swinging from side to side at a rapid pace. How could it not? He was surrounded by good things!

All they needed for this to be even better was some food!

Bacon felt kind of sounded like one of those vehicles humans would use to move from one point to another. Just a softer version. He tilted his head in an attempt to comprehend this, but with so much affection coming from all angles, there wasn’t really a need to understand any of this. He decided to just be affectionate back and lick Cat’s furry coat. It tasted nice and cold and snowy! Bacon liked all of those things.

Well, there were worse ways to get the snow and such else off of her, Skeezix decided, still purring as Bacon decided that she needed a good bath. Granted, it was making all of that fluff stand up in doggy-styled cowlicks, but hey, easier than finding someone's bath tub to jump into.

There was not a force in the world that was going to get her to wash with her own tongue, it was a line she did not want to venture into. Ew.

After a few more licks, one of the brighter children picked her up as you were supposed to properly handle a cat. From behind and gently under the armpits, so that the claws and teeth were pointing away from you. No struggle was going to happen as this little lad smelled mostly of the chicken coop at this house, and he was a gentle little lad. Good boy.

She'd have to come here later as Frau Holle and drop off goodies for these kids. Some handmade dolls, homemade pastry and candy. Little hands somehow found a spot that was pure bliss to have scratched behind one ear and before her brain went to the same mushy happiness that half a bottle of whiskey usually provided, Skeezix wondered if it was because of her heritage or the shape she was in that made it feel so good.

Cat was picked up and cuddled and given all kinds of attention and Bacon was happy for it, but of course, Bacon would like a bit of that attention as well. Luckily, he did not have to wait a very long time before some of the little humans became stroking his fur again and kissing him on the top of his head and scratch behind his ears with those tiny paws of theirs. This really was a wonderful day.

And it got even better.

When one of the tiny humans asked Boss if it could take him inside for food, the dog listened intently. And when Boss agreed, Bacon’s tail wagged so fast from side to side that he probably could have hurt someone with it. It was a glorious day! He instantly answered the tiny human’s call and hurried over to where it was standing. A different tiny human was occupying Boss by building another one of those big snowball creatures, so Bacon did not have to worry about his human right this moment. He could go for the food without a sense of guilt.

Who was worrying? Certainly not the fluffy orange purrbeast currently being held by one of the children. No, this was a completely blissed out cat, who was limp from ear and chin scritches.

Also creating something of a damp spot on the boy's coat as she started, of all the things to start doing again....drooling happily. Food had been registered as a word on some unconcious level, and Skeezix would trot inside after a free meal here happily.

After the scritches.

"O..m...goodness..is the cat drooling on you? What kind of stupid cat drools like a dog?" One of the other children asked.
